The Renaissance Market Town (RMT) initiative was established in July 2002 by Yorkshire Forward, the Regional Development Agency (RDA) for Yorkshire and Humber. It was a ten-year plan designed to support sustainable rural towns in the region. The ultimate aim was to create attractive ‘rural capitals’ within the region where people are able to live, work, invest and visit. Through the creation of a Town Team Delivery Plan, sponsored by the RDA, Renaissance Knaresborough (RK) was established in 2005. RK is not-for-profit organisation, it has long provided necessary framework, structure and organisation to reinforce the role of Knaresborough as a service centre for residents, businesses and for the surrounding rural communities.

The organisation has championed numerous community causes over the years, such as property improvement grants designed to maintain the character of the town, the introduction of a viaduct terrace, improvements to Bebra Gardens and Frazer Theatre, as well as organising numerous town signature events and festivals. The organisation is transformational tool and champion of causes for the local community. Renaissance Knaresborough has suffered challenges in the past such as funding and resources, however the organisation remains strongly committed to the development and delivery of local causes. RK is continuing to broaden its support with local residents, professionals and businesses, building a broader support base and improved resources for the future and long term prosperity of the town.
